O sweet spontaneous earth - July 2008
O sweet spontaneous earth
how often have the doting fingers of prurient philosophers pinched and poked thee,
has the naughty thumb of science prodded thy beauty...
thou answerest them only with spring.
So wrote e.e. cummings in his ode to our terrestrial home, and where science and philosophy have failed, enter the music of Clerestory. In the finale of our second season, the eight familiar voices of this acclaimed a cappella ensemble celebrate nature in all its wild and beautiful forms. From rambunctious madrigals like Wilbye's "Sweet Honey-Sucking Bees," to pastoral part-songs like Stanford's "The Blue Bird," to rarely-heard gems like Howells' "The Scribe," this performance brings nature's voice to life.
